Today, a supervisor at work asked me the usual, "How are you?" and when I gave my usual, "Super, fantastic, and wonderful," answer, she paused. Normally, she laughed a little and went on her way.
However, today, she thought about what I said.
"How do you sustain that?" she asked.
Taking a deep breath, I hesitated because I had not expected her to consider my standard answer to a question we all ask each other throughout the day when we encounter someone.
"How are you?" is a very common question, but how many expect an answer, or listen to the answers?
Remembering the song, Some days are Diamonds, I told her, "Some days are diamonds and some days are stone. I try to think of all stones as possible diamonds."
Looking at the ceiling, tilting her head to the side, she said, "I like that song, but still that has to be hard to do all the time."
I had to admit, "Some days, it is difficult. Most days, I can manage to think beyond the stones."
What I didn't tell her was that writing novels are my diamonds. No matter how tough life gets some days, I can think about writing and those stones begin to look polished and shiny. Even when I am not writing, I know the words are not far away. The novels I have written continue to shine. They are not flawless or huge, but they are my gemstones, my diamonds.
