Writing is not something we set a block of time for doing. It is 24/7 and we manage to squeeze or make time for everything else, including sleep.
Regardless of what else we must do in life - jobs, sleep, eat, family, etc. - all stops when inspiration strikes even if only long enough to write it down to remember later when a more convenient time is available.
Backs of envelopes, napkins in restaurants, old receipts at the bottom of our purses or scattered in our cars, even toilet tissue have been attacked when inspiration hits.
King of Crystal Mountain began with a dream that wouldn't let me alone until I wrote it down. It grew into a behemoth at 147,000 words back in the greenhorn days of when I thought I was a real writer.
Now, over a decade later, four novels on Amazon later, I have returned "home" because the book is just too great to let it collect dust without anyone reading it. It is the first of a four-book series, The Corundum Empire series, and full of adventure, mysterious places and people. King Chalce takes a mysterious journey with Tian, a dwarf, into a strange land and learns how to be a true dragon-slaying king. Next in the series is the Queen of Crystal Mountain, which dates BEFORE the King book in time sequence and draws the two novels into one ending. Following these two novels, the series will continue with Penjara Fortress and Tramontane.
After learning to write, copy edit, edit, and proof, I have refined and shaped this book down to a more manageable size of 123,000 words. I think of the statue of David sometimes while writing and editing. The artist began with a big block of marble and removed everything that wasn't David. That is what we accomplish when we edit our works. I have chipped away and polished this book long enough - it is NOW about to be released.
(back to proofing before going to my day job)
